The East Bay EDA participated in the TeamCalifornia booth at the BIO 2007 Exhibition, which featured the largest gathering of biotech exhibitors in history, with more than 1,900 companies and 60 domestic, country and regional pavilions representing every aspect of the biotechnology industry. Most of the Exhibition attendees came from the concurrent 2007 BIO International Convention, which drew a record 22,366 attendees, a nearly 15 percent increase from the previous year, with representatives from 48 states and 64 countries. One-third of attendees came from outside the United States. Innovators in biotechnology from around the world connected here with investors, executives, policy makers, government leaders, and journalists to discuss the boundless potential of biotechnology in health care, agriculture, energy, and industry. The East Bay EDA ended up with 28 leads for follow up. The 2008 BIO International Convention will be held Tuesday- Friday, June 17-20, 2008 at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, CA. The SEMICON West 2007 trade show will be held July 16th through 20th at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. According to a survey released in May, the East Bay is the fourth leading “Nano Metro” location in the country, and San Jose and San Francisco rank first and second. The survey was conducted by the Project on Emerging Nanotechnologies, an initiative jointly sponsored by the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and the Pew charitable Trusts and displays the results graphically on a map of the US. This is an important early lead in a technology that, according to one source, will be incorporated into $2.6 trillion worth of manufactured goods by 2014. Just as with biofuels, another emerging industry in which the East Bay enjoys an early lead, it will be our local responsibility to figure out how best to take advantage of this opportunity. On May 22nd the Northern California Trade Corridor Coalition met in Stockton to approve its work plan and review the status of the State’s allocation of the $2 billion trade corridor infrastructure bond program. Lead by the Bay Area Council, East Bay EDA is actively involved with this effort to bring together leading business from Northern California to support increased investment in the highway, freight rail, port and related trade infrastructure. As the East Bay is home to the Port of Oakland and the Bay Area’s principal goods movement corridors (I-80, I-880, and I-580) the work of the coalition is extremely important to East Bay EDA’s near and long term efforts to address the region's corridor congestion, which continues to impact goods movement and commercial freight. If you are interested in becoming involved with the Coalition, please download and complete the membership form, or contact East Bay EDA for more information. 2006-07 is proving to be a "banner year" for the issuance of Industrial Development Bonds (IDBs) in Alameda County.
