East Bay businesses were honored for waste reduction
achievements
Sustainability was the key subject at East Bay EDA’s fall meeting held in the City of Oakland. The meeting started off with an energizing discussion of key sustainable business practices that ensure the future of businesses and lead to wise investments by shareholders. The program, “Investing in Sustainability: Ensuring the Future of Business,” featured a conversation between David Douglas, Vice President of Eco-Responsibility for Sun Microsystems and Kirsten Ritchie, Director of Sustainable Design for Gensler.
In addition to many thought provoking questions being raised and discussed, Douglas emphasized to the audience the importance of just getting started. Doing something small and achieving positive results is a great motivator to do even more. Following this, the StopWaste Patnership’s Business Efficiency Awards for 2007 were presented to honor companies who sought out innovative steps they could take to implement sustainable business practices and now serve as models for other businesses in
our region and beyond.
Clif Bar Inc. received the special Sustainability Award for its long term commitment to sustainability. The Annual Award for 2007 went to Eastmont Town Center, Mills College, Quaker-Tropicana-Gatorade, Service West and U. S. Foodservice San Francisco. Honorable Mention went to Amtrak and Finelite.

intended to strengthen the East Bay's
relationship with major companies with
significant investment in the region.

2007 edition of annual report features new design and focus
The 2007 East Bay Indicators report, which was released at our October 19 General Membership meeting, places special emphasis on the state of the East Bay's working people. A reflection of our renewed partnership with United Way of the Bay Area in producing the annual report, this focus on working families is much needed and comes at a time when housing and health care costs are on the rise.
The report provides data and analysis on the economy, industry, health care, education, the environment and quality of life.
East Bay EDA will be working with United Way of the Bay Area throughout the coming year to discuss the successes and challenges outlined in the 2007 East Bay Indicators report, and look forward to your contribution to those discussions.
Members will receive a hard copy of the report by mail in mid-November. Click

Study examines the impact of goods
movement in the East Bay
In July of this year the Metropolitan Transportation Commission
(MTC) initiated a study examining the economic, environmental and transportation-related impacts that could result as the demand for goods movement services grows in the Bay Area, while the supply of land available for goods movement business declines. The study will examine the inner East Bay I-80/880 and North Peninsula US 101 corridors and identify the cumulative implications of local land use decisions for the efficiency and cost of regional goods movement. East Bay EDA has been invited to participate on the study’s steering committee and will keep members informed of the progress and seek input to inform the study.
