Dr. Edward Leamer, Director, UCLA Anderson Forecast, is California’s leading economist, and authors the Anderson Forecast’s California Outlook. In addition to his position as Director of the Anderson Forecast, Dr. Leamer is the Chauncey J. Medberry Professor of Management, Professor of Economics and Professor of Statistics at UCLA.                                                                               Ed is a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research and an occasional visiting scholar at both the International Monetary Fund and the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System.  He served on Governor Wilson’s Council of Economic Advisors from 1995-98 and briefly on Governor Schwartzenegger’s Economic Recovery Council.  He is currently on the Advisory Board of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Economic Analysis.  In 2005-2006 he chaired a panel of the National Academy of Sciences on outsourcing and delivered the report to Congress.

Perhaps more to the point for our purposes, is the excellent record of the UCLA Anderson Forecast under his leadership.  In its December 2000 release, the UCLA Anderson forecast was the first of the blue chip forecasters to accurately predict a recession in 2001.  In December of 2001 the Forecast correctly predicted the weakness of the recovery in 2002 and 2003.  And, as early as 2002 the Forecast was warning about a momentum-driven overheated housing market that was sure to cause problems for the economy.

Business and government leaders from around the East Bay region came to hear Dr. Leamer’s analysis of the many factors driving the national, state and East Bay economies, and his forecast for the year ahead.
