This year’s program, titled “Getting into the Major Leagues through Sustainable Business Practices,” featured a keynote address by Sapna Shah, who discussed key sustainability components corporate professionals embrace to improve their bottom line and their environmental performance. In addition, a panel of experts presented sustainability measures that have worked for them in business, local government and public/private partnerships. The program concluded with the presentation of this year’s StopWaste Partnership Awards. Honorable Jerry Brown, Mayor, City of Oakland, provided a welcome to the City, recognition of the leadership of the Oakland Athletics in utilizing recyclable cups and instituting an extensive recycling program and encouragement for increased efforts by everyone. |

Jim Wilson, President of Bay Area Sports Management, is the person who has spearheaded the waste reduction and recycling program at the Coliseum. With his long history and strong background in business, Jim is committed to saving money by reducing waste and he provided an entertaining and encouraging description of how the project began and worked out.

| EDAB Chair Keith Carson introduced the next topic “Lighting Up the Field”, which honored PG&E as they celebrate 100 years of service to customers in our region. On behalf of EDAB, Carson presented Tom Guarino, Public Affairs Manager for Alameda County for PG&E, a resolution recognizing PG&E's commitment and partnership on numerous initiatives for the betterment of our East Bay region. Anne Taylor, representing Assemblyman Johan Klehs, also used the opportunity to recognize PG&E's years of service and leadership. |
Tom Guarino has been instrumental in strengthening the link between PG&E and EDAB to improve the economic vitality of the East Bay.

And LizFigueroa, State Senator, also took the opportunity to thank PG&E for its efforts in the last few years to improve the economy by providing financial support of local economic development efforts.

Karen Smith, Executive Director of StopWaste.Org, formerly the Alameda County Waste Management Authority & the Source Reduction and Recycling Board and Rory Bakke, Senior Program Manager for StopWaste, presented the topic "Getting into the Major Leagues with Sustainable Business Practices", and introduced the keynote speaker.

| The Keynote Speaker for the event was Sapna Shah who discussed key sustainability components corporate professionals embrace to improve their bottom line and their environmental performance.
Since joining The Center in February in 2003, Ms. Shah has also contributed to several projects including Partnership Conversations, a two-year investigation into long-term public/private partnerships and the success of such alliances. She has also worked with corporations on improving internal processes. Prior to joining The Center, Sapna was a market research consultant, helping Fortune 500 clientele define their market strategies by conducting qualitative and quantitative analysis. She holds a B. The first panelist presentation titled "Being Part of a Successful Team – What Local Government Does to Achieve Environmental Success" was made by Carolyn Bloede, Waste Reduction and Recycling Program Manager for Alameda County General Services Agency.Carolyn Bloede joined the Alameda County General Services Agency in 2003 where she is responsible for developing and implementing sustainability programs for County operations. As Program Manager of the Resource Conservation & Recycling group, she works with County staff to implement environmentally preferable procurement, green building, source reduction, and recycling programs. She has worked in the private sector for Gap, Inc. implementing sustainability programs and providing environmental consulting services to a wide variety of retailers and manufacturing industries. She holds a B. S. degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Colorado and an M.S. in Engineering from San Jose State University. George Valerga, Director of Maintenance, McAfee Coliseum, presentation was titled " Batting Clean Up - Making an Environmental Plan Work"
George is dedicated to making the Coliseum the most resource efficient sports complex in the United States. At the age of 12, he started out in maintenance with his family business and later he directed maintenance for the Rossmoor Retirement Community in Walnut Creek. In 2003, he brought his experience and drive to the Coliseum and has been a major force behind the venue’s outstanding environmental performance as a StopWaste client.

The topic "Completing the Perfect Triple Play - Saving Money and the Environment" was covered by Kevin Owens, who is currently Product Marketing Manager for Metro Furniture, a California-based manufacturer of refined, modern furniture for meeting spaces and private offices. A Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) accredited professional since 2003, Kevin is currently leading Metro in a “Strategy Toward Sustainability” which includes thorough auditing of furniture materials, employee involvement in sustainable product decision-making, the launching of PBDE-free upholstery foam (the first in the industry) and managing Metro’s first Greenguard Certification project. "Our Most Valuable Players: Annual StopWaste Partnership Awards" presentations were made by Lorraine Dietrich, Alameda Co. Waste Mgmt. Auth. President and Thomas Ott, Alameda County Recycling Board President. StopWaste Partnership Awards were made to businesses who showed continuous improvement, concern for environment and community, the presence of an internal champion. and modeled success in a competitive business environment.
Five firms were awarded "Honorable Mention":*Golden Gate Fields - Albany *Washington Hospital - Fremont *Society of St. Vincent de Paul of Alameda County *U. S. Pipe - Union City *Pacific Steel Casting Company - Berkeley
