EDAB’s Board Retreat, April 14, 2006

EDAB Board of Directors' Retreat

April 14, 2006, from 8:30 am to 12:00 Noon

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

Berkeley, California

EDAB's Board members enjoyed a remarkable view of the San Francisco Bay, and a very comfortable facility at the Lab. The “Advanced Light Source” tour of the Lab which followed the event, was also well attended by EDAB Board Members.

Keith Carson, EDAB Chair and President of the Alameda County Board of Supervisors, welcomed the participants (above).
David McGraw, Associate Director & COO, Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, welcomed the more than 70 EDAB Board Members who participated in the 2006 Annual Board Retreat.

The work session began with a report on the Election of Officers and the vote on EDAB's name change to East Bay Economic Development Alliance, by EDAB Executive Director, Bruce Kern.

The logo for the new organizational name, East Bay Economic Development Alliance, was also presented (see image below).

Dr. Chris Thornberg, Senior Economist with the UCLA Anderson Forecast, provided a current economic outlook for the East Bay.

His PowerPoint presentation for this speech has been converted to PDF format,  and can be viewed by clicking here .

Dr. Anthony Townsend, Research Director with the renowned Institute for the Future in Palo Alto, shared the Institutes “10-Year Forecast” which is updated annually and was just released last week and provided some insights into global trends.  For a PDF of his presentation, click here

Executive Director Bruce Kern, and Mike Brown, EDAB Vice Chair, who is with Morgan Miller Blair, reported on on EDAB's Work Plan and Accomplishments and  led a discussion on priorities for FY 2006-07.

Contra Costa Board of Supervisors' Chair, John Gioia, participated in the sessions priority setting discussion.

Housing - particularly high-density units that are affordable to middle and low income residents, was one of the highest concerns expressed.  EDAB  is working with a wide spectrum of interest groups and the East Bay Housing Coalition to provide support to housing projects.

It was suggested that advocates (including community leaders, lenders and experts) be available to speak on behalf of these projects to help counter community opposition.  Look for a website in the fall (www.jobshousing.com) to help facilitate this issue.

Alameda County Central Labor Council representative, Sharon Cornu, expressed the need to maintain industrial lands in the East Bay

Transportation infrastructure (including keeping the Goods Movement project alive and moving forward, with support from all of EDAB's members) was still a primary concerns expressed by many Board members.
The meeting concluded with five of the Board members receiving tickets to an A's Game, courtesy of Alameda County.

Remember that Dr. Thornberg will be at the EDAB Membership meeting on May 12th from 8-10:30 am at Centennial Hall in Hayward to present his Annual Economic Forecast.  Everyone is welcome to attend
