MONTHLY COMPARISON
-- According to the California Employment Development
Department, between October 2007 and November 2007, the
total number of jobs in the East Bay counties of Alameda and
Contra Costa rose by 2,100 jobs to reach 1,066,100.
-
Trade, transportation, and utilities added a smaller-than-
average seasonal increase of 3,400 jobs, with Retail trade
registering a gain of 2,900 jobs as department, clothing, and other
stores increased staffing for the holiday shopping season.

Government expanded seasonally by 1,100 jobs.
? Construction posted a larger-than-average seasonal decrease of
1,400 jobs. Specialty trade contractors (down 800 jobs) accounted
for most of the losses.

Financial activities fell by 1,100 jobs, which is atypical to the
average 100-job gain between October and November for the
past 17 years.
ANNUAL COMPARISON
-- Between November 2006 and November 2007, industry
employment in the East Bay counties advanced by 3,600 jobs, or
0.3 percent. The gain marked the metropolitan area's 42nd
consecutive month of year-over employment increases.

Construction showed the largest year-over job change of any
major industry--a cutback of 7,800 jobs, largely in specialty trade
contractors (down 5,000 jobs).

Government reported the 17th consecutive month of year-over
job gains by adding 4,500 jobs, largely in local public schools (up
4,000 jobs).
-
Educational and health services rose by 4,100 jobs, with the
largest gain in health care (up 1,800 jobs).

Financial activities lost a total of 3,500 jobs, primarily in banks,
savings and loans, and credit unions (down 2,400 jobs)

EAST BAY MANUFACTURING PAYROLL
EMPLOYMENT
-- The East Bay's manufacturing sector remained unchanged
between October and November 2007. A year-over-year
comparison showed an overall improvement of 300 jobs when
compared with November 2006.

BAY AREA EMPLOYED RESIDENTS --
Between October and
November 2007, the number of employed residents (employed
persons who reside within the specified region) increased 3,700 in
the East Bay and 4,100 in San Francisco, while San Jose saw an
increase of 3,000. An annual comparison showed the East Bay
gaining 600, while San Francisco gained 6,600 and San Jose gained
7,200.
