EAST BAY PAYROLL EMPLOYMENT

MONTHLY COMPARISON
According to the California Employment Development Department’s Labor Market report, between July 2009 and August 2009, the total number of jobs located in the East Bay counties of Alameda and Contra Costa County decreased by 3,700 jobs to reach 980,200.

  • Trade, transportation, and utilities lost 900 jobs, primarily in retail trade (down 500 jobs).
  • Professional and business services netted a loss of 700 jobs, while government dipped by 600 jobs.
  • Educational and health services reduced payrolls by 600 jobs, mainly in ambulatory health care services (down 300 jobs).
  • On the upside, manufacturing gained 300 jobs, largely in non-durable goods (up 200 jobs).

ANNUAL COMPARISON
Between August 2008 and August 2009, the total number of jobs located in the East Bay slipped by 45,800 jobs or 4.5 percent.

  • Trade, transportation and utilities decreased by 10,800 jobs. Retail trade (down 7,100 jobs) accounted for the majority of the loss.
  • Construction lost 9,400 jobs, predominately in specialty trade contractors (down 6,800 jobs).
  • Professional and business services dipped by 7,000 jobs. Employment services trimmed 2,700 of those jobs.
  • Leisure and hospitality shed 5,300 jobs. Food services and drinking places (down 3,900 jobs) accounted for more than two-thirds of the decrease.

EAST BAY CONSTRUCTION EMPLOYMENT
The majority of the East Bay’s construction posted losses in the year-over-year comparison, with only Highway, Street & Bridge Construction posting an increase of 200 jobs.  Specialty trade contractors continue to incur the most severe losses, losing 6,800 over the previous 12 months.

EAST BAY MANUFACTURING PAYROLL EMPLOYMENT
The East Bay’s manufacturing sector showed an overall loss of 5,900 jobs when compared with August 2008. Petroleum and coal products manufacturing was the only sector to post an increase of 200 jobs.
